Yoga at Home Tips

I love that you're here. It means you're looking to either begin or reconnect with a home yoga practice. You're opening yourself up to receiving the magic of a truly transformative practice.

In this blog post, I share lots of tips with you, and as you read this, you're literally practicing yoga. When you reflect, you're practicing svadhyaya, which involves self-study, self-reflection, self-discovery, and growth. But it's important to do all of this with two other parts of the practice: ahimsa + satya. Ahimsa emphasises non-harm and non-violence, so be kind, compassionate, and forgiving to yourself as you make these reflections. Satya focuses on truthfulness, and sometimes we need to be honest with ourselves and take responsibility for our past actions.

Okay, let's dive straight in.

Drop the 'I Can't' Attitude

Okay. Please know that I say this with love (+ ahimsa), but if you're saying 'I can't practice yoga at home,' then you'll never create a yoga practice at home. So, let go of the 'I can't' mindset + learn how. Practicing at home offers a completely different experience compared to practicing in a studio class or attending a yoga event or festival. They are all yoga, but in different environments with different vibes.

Your Environment is Everything

I often hear people say that they can't practice at home because they get easily distracted + struggle to focus. It saddens me to hear this for numerous reasons. Firstly, you're stopping yourself from accessing a beautiful + transformative practice with that mindset. Secondly, our homes should be a sanctuary - a place of rest, a place to revive, whether you practice yoga or not. It's ESSENTIAL for our well-being to have a space that is sacred, clutter-free, calm + peaceful, whether that's your whole home or just a space.

What Resistance Do You Have?

'Your past is not a home to live in, but a place to learn from.'

If you used to practice yoga at home + want to reconnect with it again, grab your journal or notebook and compassionately + truthfully (not always easy) reflect on why + what went wrong. Maybe it was because you overwhelmed yourself with doing too many practices? Maybe it was the length of practices that didn't fit in with life? Maybe it was the time of day—maybe planning to do it before work but not leaving enough time, or at the end of the day when you are tired?

When you reflect on these questions, you start to identify what needs to change to make it flow into your life better. When we know better, we do better.

Respect Your WHOLE Well-being

Every time you show up to practice, you are taking care of yourself, respecting yourself, + showing your body + mind the care it so deserves. When you don't, unconsciously your behaviors are giving off the vibe that you're not deserving of taking time for yourself. This isn't just for a yoga practice but for everything in life. So, anytime you make an excuse or there is a reason you don't follow through with what you've set out to do, channel your inner cheerleader + remind yourself of how much you deserve to look after yourself + how important it is. Your well-being is so precious + you're the only one who can truly nurture it.

Start Small

Habits are created through repetition + like I mentioned earlier, you’re creating a habit. So start small. Make it easy for yourself not hard. 5 minutes is better than nothing. It really is.

Be Prepared

Our brains always love the path of least resistance, so they thrive on things being easy rather than taking the harder path. Make it as easy as you can by saving your favorite practices. Explore practices that resonate with you - maybe it's their length that is appealing to you or the style. On the Inspired Club, we have lots to choose from!

Plan

Being organised + planning is going to be really helpful. Take out your diary + schedule in when you can practice or when you'd like to add in a practice. Sometimes we mentally plan, but then when it comes to actually doing it, we have a really busy day planned + there isn't enough time.

Meet Yourself Where You're At

As human beings, we are in constant fluctuation with how we feel physically, emotionally, mentally, energetically, and hormonally. So much affects how we feel. Take a moment before you practice and ask yourself, 'How do I feel?' + let that inspire what you choose to practice. You'll get so much more from your practice this way.

The WHOLE Picture

I truly believe that the biggest change comes from embracing yoga philosophy, which is why I teach it on the Inspired Club. You can listen to these videos like a podcast while walking or commuting - it's a great way to incorporate a new habit into something you already do. On days when you've planned to do yoga but don't feel physically inclined to practice asana or meditation, make it cozy and inviting. Grab a cup of tea, snuggle on the sofa, and create an appealing environment to overcome resistance.

Your State of Being

Before you practice, your mind might be giving you a hundred reasons not to practice, but it's about changing that mindset + reminding yourself that you deserve to feel your best self. You're only going to do that by changing the state of being that you are in. Think of how you feel after you have practiced + remind yourself that state of being + feeling is made possible by showing up for yourself through your practice.

Realistic Routine

We can plan what we think is the 'perfect' routine, but realistically, we end up not doing it because it doesn't flow with our lifestyle or even just the highs + lows of life. Create a routine, but keep it simple + effective. My daily routine consists of reading, journaling, meditation + asana. They're the non-negotiables, BUT what changes depending on life is the time that I do those things. I might only read one page of my book, write one paragraph in my journal, meditate for a few minutes + step on my mat for 5 minutes. I can have it all done in 10 minutes if I need to. But I really value that time of showing up for myself. My energy is so affected for the whole day if I don't show up for myself.

Discipline Over Motivation

We rely so much on motivation, but it truly comes in waves + we can't rely on it to get things done. Choosing the right path isn't always easy, and there are times when we're not going to feel enthusiastic, but it's about honoring the commitment we make to ourselves. We have to practice patience too + move away from instant gratification that surrounds us in modern life. Sometimes we can start off really well for a week, but then the novelty + motivation wear off, and what we're left with is the need to be disciplined to get it done. So every time you show up to practice, you're not just practicing yoga but also discipline + patience.

Time + Choice

Your time + energy are reflections of your life. Ultimately, you get to choose how you spend them. We often use the excuse "I don't have enough time," but when we reflect on where we're wasting our time, we realise that we can use it to do better things for our well-being. Catch yourself engaging in habits that don't serve you, and consider replacing them with some form of yoga.

Because You're Worth It

Another excuse I often hear is "I can't do yoga because I can't afford it," but have you considered where you could make changes to your spending to prioritise your well-being? When we truthfully examine our spending habits, we begin to recognise that we can approach spending in a more high-vibrational way.

Investing in your well-being shouldn't be seen as a luxury but as a necessity. A change in mindset can make all the difference.

I understand that not everyone is in a privileged position to invest financially in their well-being, which is why I have created free YouTube videos.

You're Not Alone

I cannot step on the mat for you or meditate on your behalf. However, know that you are never alone.

If you are seeking to learn yoga or enhance your practice, I encourage you to find a teacher who can guide + support you.

My inbox is always a safe space, so please feel free to reach out, + I will do my best to provide support and assistance.

Right Here, Right Now

Every time you engage in this behavior, you're wasting precious moments of life. Whenever you find yourself saying, "I'll start on Monday," or "I'll begin next month," or "I'll start in the New Year," you're allowing the gift of life to slip away.

Remember, the only truly perfect time to start is now.
