Waves
In the vast expanse of our inner landscapes, we find ourselves amidst the constant ebb + flow of emotions, like the undulating motion of ocean waves. This month, we explore the metaphor of waves as our guiding theme, diving into its philosophical depths for our journey toward emotional well-being + self-discovery.
Embracing the waves
Waves encapsulate the flow of life, encompassing rises, peaks, + descents—the natural ebb + flow of high + low moments.
As Lalah Delia so beautifully says: “Embrace the waves of emotion that come crashing over you. They are a reminder of your humanity + your capacity to feel.” These emotional waves serve as powerful reminders of our humanity + our profound ability to experience life deeply.
Central to this exploration is recognising that emotional well-being is our responsibility, calling us to embrace the tumultuous waves of our inner world with courage + compassion.
Understanding emotions
To be human is to feel, but emotions are complex + sometimes hard to navigate. We may not even know what we’re feeling! Yet within this complexity lies the potential for deeper self-awareness + emotional mastery.
Learning to identify primary emotions helps us understand physiological responses, behavioural expressions, + subjective experiences.
Psychologist Dr. Robert Plutchik proposed eight primary emotions as the foundation for all others: joy, sadness, acceptance, disgust, fear, anger, surprise, + anticipation. His Emotion Wheel helps visualise emotional complexity + label what we feel.
Navigating moods + emotions
Moods + emotions are related but distinct:
Emotions are context-dependent, intense, + short-lived. They often arise as reactions to specific thoughts.
Moods last longer, are less tied to specific triggers, + reflect a series of recent experiences.
Understanding this difference supports emotional clarity + self-regulation.
